Sulfuric acid is classified as UN1830, Class 8 (corrosive), packing group II, and its land transport is governed by NOM-002-SCT/2011. What is sulfuric acid used for?
Sulfuric acid is one of the most widely consumed industrial chemicals worldwide. In Mexico it is mainly used in: fertilizer production (superphosphates), petroleum refining, mineral processing and metallurgy, lead-acid battery manufacturing, production of detergents and other acids, water treatment and metal pickling. TRESAL transports the sulfuric acid these industries use as an input —we never manufacture or sell it—, connecting the producer with the customer’s plant.

How is sulfuric acid transported safely?
Sulfuric acid is highly corrosive and reacts with water releasing heat, so its transport requires specific measures: a dedicated unit with compatible material, segregation from bases, metals and organic materials, fill control to prevent spills, and personal protective equipment. Before each load we verify compatibility with the previous product and tank washing.

What precautions does handling sulfuric acid require?
Contact with sulfuric acid causes severe burns to skin and eyes, so its handling during loading and unloading requires care. TRESAL personnel use acid-resistant protective equipment (gloves, face shield, goggles and suitable clothing), operate with accessible emergency showers and eyewash stations, and avoid contact and mist inhalation. In case of any contact, the area is immediately rinsed with plenty of water and medical attention is sought per the shipment’s SDS. Our drivers and operators are trained in these procedures and in emergency response.

Tank trucks range from rigid units to semi-trailer tankers, so volumes can be matched to the customer’s process. Is sulfuric acid a regulated essential chemical?
Yes. Sulfuric acid is an essential chemical under Mexico’s Federal Law for the Control of Chemical Precursors, Essential Chemicals and Capsule/Tablet-Making Machines, which regulates its transport among other activities. TRESAL transports it in compliance with the applicable hazardous-materials transport regulations, with the traceability we provide for all our shipments.
Does TRESAL issue the safety data sheet (SDS)?
No. Under NOM-018-STPS-2015, the safety data sheet (SDS) is prepared by and is the responsibility of the manufacturer or importer of the chemical, not the carrier. As a carrier, TRESAL obtains the SDS from the shipper of each load and carries it on board for reference and emergency response; we neither issue nor replace that document. This separation of responsibilities is part of the regulatory compliance we provide.
